Frequently Asked Questions
Hydrochloric Acid…buy from your local Pool Shop. Pool shops also offer “non fuming acid”, often labelled “Muriatic Acid”. This is also a form of Hydrochloric Acid so it is suitable for use.
In non-diluted form it must be handled carefully to avoid spills and splashing to avoid getting it on skin or in the eyes. The pH Boss instructions dictate that the Hydrochloric Acid be diluted at the rate of 1 part acid to 4 parts water at which dilution it is easily washed off the skin or surfaces before it will cause any major distress. When diluting, always do so in a ventilated area, preferably outdoors and always add acid to water.
No. They are too large therefore too expensive to ship via courier. They are easily purchased at any pool shop or hardware store. We suggest 20 litres as a minimum size up to 100 litres for very large pools. This minimises the refilling chore to typically once per month and in many cases only once every 2 or even 3 months.
No requirement for any pH testing as the pH Boss shows the correct level of pH in your pool on the LCD screen whenever the pool pump is running.
Yes…a steady pH level in your pool means that the water will require less adjustment in chemical balance therefore using less chemicals. Typically a 30% to 50% reduction in hydrochloric acid use is achieved when the pH Boss is fitted and in use. This equation will also apply to alkalinity raising “buffer” or soda bi-carb, because the Total Alkalinity level does not decrease as quickly due to the pH BOSS adding the acid in small doses and only when required.
pH Boss has 5 different dose settings and will control the pH easily in pools of 500,000 litres and larger…see user guide for dose settings for various sized pools.
Negligible power use…less than $5 per year in most cases.
We expect the life of the Probe and the Pump to be in excess of 4 years as they are the highest quality. They will require replacing from time to time. The parts of the pump that wear over time are the squeeze tube and the rotor/roller block. We can offer spare rotor/roller blocks, rather than getting customers to replace the whole pump. This saves money as the whole pump does not require replacing for extended periods. Replacing these items is an easy task.
Expect the cost of the Pump to be about AU$120 and the Probe AU$160 plus a small delivery fee. Both these estimates are very competitive and are designed to minimise any extra expense to do with ongoing maintenance.
If ever you need to raise your Total Alkalinity from low to high (eg. 50 to 90) then the pH level will rise as well. The pH should not then be adjusted for 24 hours to allow it to settle to a lower stable reading. The “buffer delay” function facilitates this readjustment down of the pH level once a 24 hour period has lapsed after a major readjustment of the Total Alkalinity (low to high). The user guide will show the function and implementation of the “buffer delay”
If on occasion it is necessary to rapidly adjust the pH level down then this manual dosing function allows the pool owner to choose from 1 litre to 5 litres of (1 part acid to 4 parts water) diluted acid mix as a one off injection quantity. This function adds the chosen one-off dose of diluted hydrochloric acid and then the pH Boss reverts back to its normal operational settings.
Every pH BOSS is supplied ‘factory calibrated”. That means that we have set the calibration function to pH7.3 which is the best place for the pH level to be set in most pools. The pH BOSS probe will require re-calibration to maintain its accurate pH read, on average, once per year. We supply a pH7.0 tablet for the simple “one point” calibration process with the pH BOSS kit. See user guide when this task is necessary.
The pH BOSS is compatible with all surfaces in all pools – fibreglass, concrete, tiled, pebblecrete, quartzon, gunnite, marblesheen, composite, painted surface and vinyl lined. It can be used whether the pool is Ionised, Liquid Chlorine dosed, Ozone Treated or Salt Water Chlorinated including magnesium type salt chlorinators (just because the salt used is a magnesium/ potassium mix does not mean it is not your common everyday garden variety salt chlorinator albeit a great deal more expensive to buy, set up and operate).
